A DNA Genetic Testing Terminology Primer

Allison Plowden said, "The laws of genetics apply even if you refuse to learn them." Clearly the late English historian and biographer, known for her popular non-fiction about women of the Tudor period, recognized that genetic terminology is a foreign language to many of us. Genetics refers to the study of genes and their roles in inheritance. Given genetics is the basis of all living organisms, and DNA genealogy testing is a great resource for family researchers who have tapped out the paper trail on a project, I have put together a primer to help you understand genetic terms a little better.

Think of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) as a human blueprint, because it holds the code for all genetic information. As early as 1952, the Hershey-Chase experiment showed that DNA is the molecule responsible for inheritance. The twisted ladder we have come to equate with DNA was discovered 1953 when James D. Watson and Francis Crick determined the structure of DNA, using X-ray crystallography.

DNA has the appearance of a double-helix model, which looks like a twisted ladder, comprising two strands (the legs of the ladder) of DNA with nucleotides (a basic building block of DNA) pointing inward, each matching a complementary nucleotide on the other strand. A string of chemicals, or bases, form the "rungs" of the twisted ladder. The strands are made of sugar and phosphate molecules, while the bases are made of chemicals containing nitrogen.

A DNA Genetic Testing Terminology Primer

Human DNA with its genetic information is packaged within 23 pairs of chromosomes - 22 of those pairs are known as autosomes. Autosomal DNA (preferred by genealogists) refers to the genetic material that is inherited from both parents, including random contributions from their parents, grandparents, and so on. Your autosomes essentially contain a complete genetic record. The 23rd chromosome is different from the autosomes because it consists of the chromosomes that determine sex, those being the X- and Y- chromosome. Females have two "X" chromosomes, while males have one "X" and one "Y" chromosome. The Y-chromosome is transmitted from fathers to sons only, and it has unique features that make it quite useful to genealogists.

Genes are segments of DNA that carry the physical and inheritable characteristics of an organism. Humans have many thousands of genes spaced across the entire set of DNA. A gene is a specific sequence of DNA on a single chromosome that encodes a particular product. Genome refers to the entire set of genetic information across every one of the 23 chromosome pairs, including all genes, as well as gene-modifying sequences, and everything in between.

Genetics refers to the study of genes and their roles in inheritance, i.e., the way that certain traits or conditions are passed from one generation to another. Genomics, an even newer study than genetics, describes the study of all of a person's genes (the genome). Genomics is a gateway to the scientific study of complex genetic diseases, which is giving way to new possibilities for diagnostic methods and therapies for these diseases.

Through genetic testing, your haplogroup - a group of similar genetic types that share a common ancestor - can be determined. How this is possible is based on the fact that historically, all of the great human migrations involved large groups of people who split into smaller groups and went their separate to colonize the world. Each one of us belongs to a haplogroup; these haplogroups have been mapped to show the migration routes over many thousands of years.

Genetic DNA testing is amazingly simple. It requires a buccal smear, which is nothing more than a swab of the inside of your cheek to gather DNA material. To see what is contained in the DNA testing kit, as well as a video of how to take the test, please see DNA Test Kit and Instructions.

With your new found vocabulary and a knowledge of how easy it is to collect DNA for testing, you can take the next step in your family research. See how easy it is to collect a DNA sample by viewing a step-by-step video on YouTube -- How To Take A DNA Test.

Book Writing - Page Count and Chapter Length

Regardless of genre, there is no hard and fast rule about how many pages or words each chapter should contain or how many chapters should be in a book. However, there are some general guidelines in this article that may help you determine the page count and chapter length needed for your book.

Pages in a Chapter:

Many people read in spurts, at lunch time, or on the subway to work, readers enjoy chapters that can be finished in ten to fifteen minutes.

Book Writing - Page Count and Chapter Length

I try to set my chapter lengths by how long it takes me to read the material. If it goes past fifteen minutes, I may decide to divide a chapter in half and make two chapters out of it. Take into consideration that I write mostly non-fiction.

As you probably know, there's a difference in the way fiction and non-fiction are handled. In a fiction book, writers use shorter chapters. Some are only one page if that is all it takes to catch the reader up on the action of other characters in other scenes. When writing non-fiction, your chapter content needs to be specific to your chapter's heading or title.

Twenty pages per chapter is a good rule of thumb, but the most important thing is to include everything that relates to a particular topic in one chapter. For example, if your book is about fishing, you want to include the bulk of your information about fly casting in one chapter. All your info about bait and lure would be in another chapter.

Chapters/Pages in a Book:

These guidelines should give you a general idea of how to determine the length of your chapters and your book.

If your book is titled "The Accuracy of the US Census" you may have 52 chapters (one on each state). If your book is titled "Ten Tips for Marketing" you may have only ten chapters. There's no rule about how many chapters a book can or must have.

In order to be considered a book rather than a pamphlet or booklet, a book needs to be at least 10,000 words. If your book has more than 475 pages, you might want to consider producing it in two volumes.

Because you will submit your manuscript as an 8.5" x 11" word-processing document, you cannot be certain of its final length until after your publisher formats it for print. I have found that 250-300 words will approximate one page of 12-point font text in a standard size (5.5"x8" or 6"x9") perfect-bound book.

Writing Natural Non-Fiction

I recently wrote an article, Writing Naturally wherein someone commented that they liked the article for fiction, but how could one apply these same techniques to nonfiction.

Creative nonfiction is a compilation of facts about a particular subject or event and may include interviews and more than one side or viewpoint of the subject or event. The writing down of facts can be particularly boring. You surely cannot input your personal opinion into this type of piece if you're not writing an op-ed piece. So how to you keep you readers involved and moving through the story?

A nonfiction piece is written in much the same manner as a fiction piece, only the facts are not made up. So how do you bring in the creativity?

Writing Natural Non-Fiction

Good nonfiction writing incorporates vivid imagery and description.

One of the most boring news pieces in a weekly newspaper setting involves reporting Planning Department business or events; yet growth, new development and the building of a large new shopping center in town, was definitely of interest to the locals. One reporter that worked at the Mariposa Gazette and Miner used this as a lead into a story about new development:

"The Sugar Tree Shopping Center crossed a paper bridge today and moved closer to its initial groundbreaking. The Planning Commission, in a 5-0 vote..."

Without having to repeat the boring stuff said in one of these meetings, the reporter let everyone know up front that movement was occurring on this project as well as informing them that some of the processes were being accomplished.

As a reporter, you are the eyes, the ears, the nose, the mouth and the hands and feet of the people who are reading your stories. You are the one to provide them with an awareness of your subject through these senses. You tell them what you see, hear, smell, taste and touch. This will bring more creativity into your nonfiction article without taking away from the factual basis or the truth of it.

Nonfiction simply means that the events as written are real. The piece is totally fact-based. But it doesn't mean you can't be creative in your description of these facts. You just can't be creative with the facts, nor slant the story to a particular viewpoint. You want to provide your readers as much as possible with a 360-degree view of what you're writing about.

Use your viewpoint characters creatively.

If your nonfiction piece involves interviews - let your interviewees or characters describe the scenes for you. Get them to tell you in their own words, what they saw, what they felt, what they touched with their five senses and bring it into your piece.

People, when they talk naturally, can be quite eloquent sometimes. Use it. Use it all.

In the mountain ranges along the Merced River on the way to Yosemite, one year we had one hell of a fire. This fire called for the use of the big bombers, helicopters, walking fire crews and teams from the Youth Authority. Firefighters make good use of words in their descriptions, which add the depth and the intensity that you would need in this kind of story.

I could feel the hair on the back of my neck sizzle, said firefighter Joe Blow, and I knew something bad was about to happen. Sure enough, not 100 feet from where my crew was cutting a fire line, all the trees along the top ridge exploded.

And you don't necessarily want to clean up your quotes from these type of interviewees. Their particular syntax adds color and flavor to your piece and puts the reader right into the story.

Use your own viewpoint for description

One mistake that writers make is that they think that their own creative description of the scene is not allowed in nonfiction writing. Not true. Remember earlier where we discussed that you were the eyes, ears, and etc., of your reader? This is a fact. Your experience at the scene is valid to print.

The burnt timbers cast skeleton shadows in the early morning sun. Earlene and Bill Jones woke up to nothing more than smoke and ash. Firefighters from four precincts were called out on this 3-alarm blaze just past midnight, but by then, according to eye witnesses, the house was already lost. . .

This is just an example of using the visual sense in describing the event of a house burning. Use metaphors, allegories and whatever else strikes your fancy when writing nonfiction.

Remember - just because you're not creating the facts doesn't mean you can't be creative.

Why Write a Non-Fiction Book?

The two central pillars in effective personal marketing are the establishment of credibility and the quest for exposure. You could have a large business or you could be an independent professional. You could be selling a product or a service. Regardless why you're marketing yourself, writing a non-fiction book is one of the best ways to achieve those two pillars.

Writing a non-fiction book is a daunting exercise. But most people don't understand the extent to which it will change your life forever. Writing your first book happens only once in your life, if ever. And those who have done so will tell you their lives break down into before the book and after the book. Everything changes once you have written your first book.

The title of this article singles out non-fiction books and there's a reason for that. Authors of fiction works get tremendous benefits from the effort as well but the finished product validates their writing ability and their creativity, nothing else. For the authors of non-fiction books, the finished product validates their writing ability and their personal knowledgebase. In other words, it positions them as an expert in their field. That feeds directly into effective personal marketing, which is the objective behind this discussion.

Why Write a Non-Fiction Book?

Once you have written and published your first book, you will forever more be referred to as an author. No longer will you be a regular human being like everybody else. No. From then on, you will be part of an exclusive club. You will be an author. That label will be used in written references to your name. It will be used when introductions are made. And it will be used when people talk about you behind your back.

Being an author comes with an automatic baseline of respect from most of your peers, whether they know you or not. But it comes with more than that. It comes with immediate credibility within the topic. And if you're in a professional field, the days of justifying your expertise will come to an end. In fact, the days of looking for new clients may come to an end as well.

Books are a tremendous tool to leverage your time. The finished product presents your knowledge in a structured and optimized format. But at the time it is received by the reader, it requires no effort by you. The reader can read your book while you're on vacation or sleeping. Indeed, you invest the time and energy once but then you reap the rewards over and over again. That allows countless perfect strangers to experience your highest intellect, all at the same time.

Writing a book also opens the door to a variety of other opportunities that might be quite different than your underlying profession. Not only can the book be sold, leaving you with a profit, but it can position you for speaking engagements in your area of expertise. These opportunities can be very profitable and position you as an industry guru rather than an actual practitioner.

Admittedly, some people would prefer not to be such a guru and that's fine. But writing a book gives you that option. You can choose either path. You can publish the book and remain in the trenches, doing the same work as before except with tremendous new-found credibility, or you can accept the opportunities and redefine your identity around your new position.

Writing a book is a big job to say the least but it will change your life forever. Tactical Execution provides a lot of guidance aspiring authors can use to complete the job and promote the finished product. Please visit the website to take advantage of the resources available there.

Sex After Prostate Cancer - A Wife's Secrets

I'm not a doctor, I'm writing this article to share for purposes of encouragement, support, and genuine love for helping others through tough times. Whether male or female, we're human and we have issues with our bodies or we're faced with dealing with issues other family members, friends, and loved ones have with their bodies. We're born and we'll be out of here someday, along the way we need help.

Cancer problems and emotional trauma over cancer are not new to me. My grandmothers both had Cancer. I watched them suffer. My husband's prostate Cancer was a shock but thank-God, with different results.

When Gary was at work he worked hard. Some would say he had the managerial case of workaholism. He didn't want to go to a doctor, but he was having some difficult with sexual performance. His body wasn't cooperating with his mind. He wanted more and his body was reacting less. This is not going to be an x-rated article. It's very clean. I just want to be clear.

Sex After Prostate Cancer - A Wife's Secrets

He told his boss about not having the results he wanted with his body and how he felt frustrated. His boss kept telling him to see a doctor, don't let it go, don't make light of this. Deal with it. Get an examination and ask for help.

Finally, Gary went to the doctor and was told he had Prostate Cancer. He denied the diagnosis until he finally sought the best medical doctor he could be recommended to in the field. He ultimately had the prostate removed in a procedure that did not damage the nerves so that he would has the best possible chance of resuming sexual activity with some time.

First, there's definitely different experiences to understand after the removal of the prostate. When a man ejaculates, there's no fluids coming out. No messy sheets or partners, yet it feels good. That's different. How does a man emotionally feel about not having the fluids shoot out? It takes adjustment and since that's not coming back, he has to adjust to the physical difference, if he wants to recover better emotionally.

What happens when the desire for sexual experiences exist after the surgery and the body is not ready to cooperate with the mind, what can you do to help. A partner should be positively supportive of the desires. Sometimes, men will seek out equipment to aid with sexual processes and functions and these devices can be expensive and sometimes cause more frustration than they are worth.

For couples, it can be so helpful to find as many other loving things to do to each other, in addition to the concept of intercourse. There's so much more to explore in the areas of sensuality and gratification of the senses. They are worth exploring.

Find other ways of enjoyment for each other whether it's the adult-type movies, massage, and other fun activities. Talk about your issues and concerns and ask questions of professionals as much as you need or want help.

Another embarrassing sexual issue for a Prostate Cancer patient is following the removal of the prostate, there tends to be more urine leakage and that's not always something which can be controlled so be prepared with extra underwear and paper towels around the house to ease embarrassment. It's also great to take a change of pants to keep in the trunk of the car if you feel you need to change.

There's no magical date that you can declare for when your body will return to normal functioning after the prostate has been removed, but Gary was told to expect about 3 years and that was accurate for him. At first, nighttime relations after working all day were not the best time of day for us, morning was best. With a little more time, day or night became the same and we're much happier and very thankful for having each other, being patient and loving, and for always believing we'd experience loving like before the surgery.

The End of the World 2012 - True Or False?

What's the deal with the end of the world 2012 prediction?

Is your first reaction to dismiss it as nonsense? This isn't the first "the end of the world" prediction, or catastrophic prediction, like Y2K, bonking us over the head.

Non Fiction

As humans, our lives can get heavy with news of worldly information, especially negative information. Though we're a very smart bunch of big-brained people, when you compile all this news and information, the build-up of the end of the world paranoia and fear can add up to overwhelming proportions.

The End of the World 2012 - True Or False?

In addition, some of us gain pleasure from fanatical information that creates a big buzz and sends a frenzy of fear and sometimes sheer panic within the collective minds of huge populations of normally sane, relatively positive people. It is easy to see that the end of the world 2012 prediction theory has very strong potential for major reactive thinking.

Reacting to ideas or beliefs, whether good or bad, have powerful consequences.

It's been scientifically proven: When a belief is fortified with strong emotion, incredible results occur. For example, under strong emotional convincing, an ice-cube will burn skin, the mind will actually produce a burn on the skin. These types of experiences have been documented over and over again.

The question that needs answering is how do we control this type of information? Potentially the end of the world 2012 theory can cause some serious damage, like a financial recession where everyone tightens up their purse strings thus magnifying the idea that a lack of money is looming like an unstoppable black cloud of limitation, when most of us instinctively know that wealth and prosperity surround us in every form, at all times.

Beliefs and expectations are powerful.

The images of the 2012 end of the world nightmare are very convincing: The earth opening up and swallowing entire cities: The climate suddenly exploding into an evil storm of darkness and all other visions of absolute destruction. And the reasons for this destruction seem to be focused on us, as if we all missed the boat and lived so sinfully that god or nature has made some conscious choice to viciously end everything, to cleanse and clarify our "sinful" lifestyles and end the world.

On the other hand, some of us take a totally different view.

For example, let's consider the fundamental law of cause and effect. Is it not absolutely true that for every action there is an equal reaction? This can be understood as a perfect law. You could reasonably say that "evil" does not exist because everything that happens is a perfect reflection of simple laws of nature. In other words, if something happens it must therefore be natural or it couldn't possibly happen.

Does a frog desire to be a famous opera singer? We could all agree that would be, for lack of a better word, "evil." If you struck a C-chord on a perfectly tuned musical instrument and the sound came out as an F-chord, would the hairs on the back of your neck not stand up?

Of course the above scenarios could never happen because the natural world would not survive for more than an instant if fundamental laws of the universe behaved so unlawfully. Everything from the slightest mathematical formula would collapse in a micro-second and life would cease to exist faster than the blink of an eye.

Will the end of the world 2012 happen...?

Good question.

Will the world end next Tuesday?

Anything is possible.

What do YOU think?

Semen Can Whiten Your Teeth - Fact Or Fiction?

Can semen really whiten your teeth? Is semen good for teeth? Information about whether ejaculated human sperm can help make your teeth whiter.

Before we can make any assumptions on whether does semen whiten the teeth, the following facts should be known about ejaculate human semen before judging or coming to any conclusions.

The human semen contains a variety of ingredients, which mainly include sperm (containing DNA), citric acid, fructose, ascorbic acid, water, magnesium, enzymes, nitrogen, chlorine, potassium, creatine vitamin B12, cholesterol, phosphate, bicarbonate buffers, zinc and calcium. These are all essential for reproduction and have their own individual roles to play in the whole reproductive process, among them; calcium and zinc are held by some to be useful for the teeth, but there are no scientific proof to support that they help when it comes to whitening the teeth.

Semen Can Whiten Your Teeth - Fact Or Fiction?

Furthermore, a comparison study between the ingredients inside a tooth whitening product and semen will give us a deeper knowledge about the effectiveness of the latter as a tooth whitener.

Hydrogen peroxides, hydrated silica, polyvinylpyrrolidone, potassium nitrate, calprox, baking soda, fluoride, strontium chloride and sodium tripolyphosphate are the main ingredients which are commonly found in different teeth whiteners on the market. The bleaching chemicals and ingredients mentioned above are not found in semen, though potassium and phosphates are present there, non of them are in the proper combination with other elements which can aid in whitening the teeth. Therefore it can safely be assumed that a teeth whitening toothpaste is a much better option, rather than depending on semen to do it.

However, semen ingestion is known to lower stress and raise the women's mood due to its sugar based enzymes, and a recent study also shows that selenium, an ingredient found in semen may also serve in protection against cancer, but as far as whitening of the teeth is concerned, semen does not seem to be promising at all. It would be advisable to go for a laser clinical tooth whitening session or purchase a professional at home teeth whitening kit if you want to be through about it. Any of these will give you better results, greater assurance and a whiter, brighter smile than semen.
